News: Continental Airlines Testing Mobile Boarding Passes
Posted by Matthew Justice on Dec 5, 2007Along with many other airlines, Continental Airlines passengers in Houston will be able to board flights using just a cell phone or personal-digital assistant (PDA) instead of a regular paper boarding pass. This test program at Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) will last for three-months and might be rolled out world-wide.
Continental Airlines and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will let passengers show the bar code the airline has sent to their cell phone or PDA, instead of their paper boarding pass.
The two-dimensional bar code contains the passenger's name and flight information. A screener will confirm the bar code's authenticity with a handheld scanner. Passengers will still need to show photo identification. “The electronic boarding pass also works at airport gates. If a passenger's cell phone or mobile device loses power, the passenger can get a paper boarding pass from a kiosk or a Continental agent.”
